  • So here begins the second arm of the 'paper-chase' where we can trace the club through Neath Athletic, who became Skewen Athletic until they combined with Neath F.C. - formerly know as Neath Oil Refineries before B.P. Llandarcy.
  • The club was formed in 1932-33 through the local building firm Snow & Sons. They first joined the Neath League in 1933-34. Perhaps with some financial support they quickly established themselves as one of the leading clubs in the district and joined the Swansea League the following season but also retaining a second team in the Neath League. Elected to the second division in their first season they won promotion as champions and were also finalists in the Senior Cup. They only lost that game on appeal against St. Josephs - that the game finished early due to poor light - after winning the first game at the Vetch Field. The club also held a second team in the Neath League and won the championship while also winning the Open Challenge Cup - then won that cup four years in a row.
  • But the following season they not only won the Senior Cup, they were double winners when they claimed the Swansea League championship. To continue their success they were finalists in the West Wales Cup just the following season.
  • They entered the Welsh League for 1937-38 but the club disbanded with the outbreak of World War II.
  • There lapsed a ten-year period before the club was reformed when they rejoined the Neath League in 1949-50 and won the second division championship. They gained entry to the Welsh league for the following year but only played under the name of Garthmoor for one season. Some confusion where it's reported - in the Neath Guardian - that the club adopted the name of Neath Athletic. However, we can trace the name of Neath Athletic from the Swansea League during the early 1920s then again in the Welsh League for one season directly prior to Garthmoor's entry. Therefore, it's not quite clear if the clubs combined or, that Neath Athletic disbanded for the name to be resurrected through Garthmoor.

  • The club played in the Port Talbot league until they made a brief appearance during the Thirties. Then again, when I suspect that only the Neath League offered local competition during the second world war.
  • The club was the first team to win the Treble in 1944-45 - Champions, League Cup & Open Cup.
  • Some guesswork follows: The name G.K.B. were the intials of the owners of the local steelworks and it's my guess that the club entered the Welsh league under the name of Guest K.B. By coincidence perhaps, Port Talbot Athletic then appeared in place of the club the following season.

  • Perhaps not to be confused with the team above but Godrergraig United first played in the Swansea Gwalia league before entering the Welsh league for 1935-36.
  • While both teams were active during this period I can only suggest they combined under the name of the Athletic when they later joined the Welsh league
